Mallow Camera Club Attracts Large Crowd to GOAL Evening

Mallow Camera Club, recently hosted an evening with award winning photographers Julien Behal and Mallow’s Sean Murphy to present their own photographs from a recent trip to India, as part of an awareness campaign by GOAL. A large attendance of over 180 people attended the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow to see a presentation of photographs for over 3 hours. It was a memorable evening made all the more worthwhile by the raising of valuable funds for GOAL, predominantly by the voluntary efforts of Julien and Sean. The evening raised €3,495 which was greatfully recieved by Alison Crowzer from GOAL on the evening. MORGAN O’NEIL WINS 2009 PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

The 2009 photographer of the year took place for Mallow Camera Club recently. There were 230 entries from over twenty members of the club. The competition was based on the top five scoring images from each member.

This year the competition was judged by three members from Cork Camera Group, Moira O’Brien , Michael O’Sullivan, & Danny Foley. The competition was open to three different forms of media, Colour Print, Mono Print, & Digital Projection. Awards were for Overall Photographer of the year, Novice Photographer of the Year & Mono Photographer of the year. Members were allowed to enter up to 15 images of any media but only their five highest scoring images were counted for the final tally for the overall photographer of the year. The mono photographer of the year was based on the three highest scoring black and white prints.

The night proved to be very entertaining for all as the interval counts during the competition were indicating a very tight contest. Morgan O’Neil was the eventual winner for the overall. This capped a great season season for Morgan who had numerous prizes and accreditation’s through out the year. A very modest Morgan received great applause from all members, he thanked all for there support.

The novice photographer of the year proved to be an even closer competition with only 4 points separating the top three. There was great applause when Denis O Leary was announced the winner. The novice photographer of the year is only open to members who have not received a gold medal in a regional/national competition and to an individual who has not received a distinction. The standard of the novice photographer is of a very high standard.

The mono section was won on a very tight margin by John Hooton. John who is one of the most successful club photographers in Ireland won the competition by a single point from Morgan O’Neil. John said he was delighted with the competition and his success on retaining the trophy.

Club Chairman Paddy Fennessy, thanked the judges and complimented them on their consistent scoring throughout the night. Sean Murphy, Competition Secretary thanked all for their help in organising the event.

National Success for Mallow Camera Club

At the I.P.F. Finals held in the University of Limerick last weekend over 26 clubs competed for the top award. Mallow Camera Club were winners of the colour print panel section and 6th in the black and white section. Overall the club came 2nd. This is a new record for the club. Well done to all photographers whose work contributed to both panels. This year three judges travelled from Scotland, Italy and…Croatia respectively. Congratulations to Dundalk Camera Club who won the overall event.
Individually, Morgan O Neill took both silver and bronze medals in the colour print section. This follows Morgan’s success at the last sitting of distinction judging when Morgan was awarded an Associateship from the R.P.S. Another winner on the day was Sean Murphy who was awarded a highly commended certificate.
Adding to the success of the club, two members, Paddy Feen and Sean Colman also put forward individual panels for licenteship judging and were both successful so congratulations to both.

All in all a great weekend for Mallow Camera Club.

Club Member Seán Murphy to Appear on RTE’s Late Late Show

Seán Murphy twice Mallow Camera Club Photographer of the Year has been shortlisted for a national photographic competition, hosted by the Late Late Show. Seán, who has just returned from an overseas skiing trip, entered his image within hours of the deadline. He was delighted that his image was one of five shortlisted for the dream prize of a trip to Calcutta, India. The winner will travel to India with a professional photographer and get the opportunity to work beside him. The winner will also be given guidance and tips on street photography.

John & Morgan Win Medals at National Finals

John O’Flynn and Morgan O’Neill won Gold and Bronze medals respectively in the IPF National Print and Projected Images Finals held in Mullingar on Sunday 15 February 2009. John won his medal for best Intermediate Monochrome print, while Morgan won third place in the Open Section of the Projected Images category.

Success for mallow camera club at SACC qualifying round

The SACC regional round of the National Print & Projected Image Competition (formerly known as Print & Slide competition) was held at the Park Hotel, Clonmel on Sunday last, 7th December. This competition is a qualifying round for the national finals . There were several hundred entries from many of the camera clubs in the southern counties.
Mallow camera club was very well represented with members from all levels participating in the event. The competition was split into different categories for both advanced and intermediate. There were sections for Colour Print, Mono Print & projected image. The club results are as follows

John Hooton Wins Top UK Gold Medal

At the recent East Antrim Open Photographic Competition, John Hooton of Mallow Camera Club won the Gold Medal for the best image in the competition.

This award, from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) is much sought after in the photographic world. John’s Gold Medal winning image was in black and white, which is the first time John has won in that format. Along with the Gold Medal John also won a PAGB Bronze medal, and a special panel award for the best set of three images in the competition.

The Judge for the competition was Mr Kieran Murray, and the exhibition will travel to a number of venues around Northern Ireland over the coming months.

Photographer Of The Year 2008

The 2008 photographer of the year took place for Mallow Camera Club on Monday 19th of May. There were 298 entries from over twenty members of the club. The competition was based on the top five scoring images from each member.

This year the competition was judged by three members from Cork Camera Group, Vincent Kelly, Martin Duggan, & Danny Foley. The competition was open to four different forms of media, Colour Print, Mono Print, Digital Projection & Colour Slide. Awards were for Overall Photographer of the year, Novice Photographer of the Year & Mono Photographer of the year. Members were allowed to enter up to 15 images of any media but only their five highest scoring images were counted for the final tally.

Of the 298 images submitted, over 50% were for digital projection. Club Chairman John Hogan, thanked the judges and complimented them on their consistent scoring throughout the night. David Lavery, Competition Secretary thanked all for their help in organising the event.

2008 National Finals Result

The 2008 Irish photographic finals took place over the weekend, Thurles Camera Club hosted the event at the Tipperary Institute which proved to be a very good venue. Mallow Camera Club qualified for the event earlier this year by winning the SACC competion. The club displayed two panels, a monochrome and a colour print panel which was made up of ten images in each panel.
Of the 19 finalist Mallow Camera Club finished in fifth place overall behind the winners Dundalk Photographic Society. Mallow’s Monochrome panel finished in third place, while the colour panel finished in a disappointing ninth place. This result came as a surprise to many as Mallow have always been very strong in the colour print section.

The highlight of the final day was Sean Murphy’s silver medal in the Monochrome print section. The three distinguished judges from Northern Ireland, the UK & Turkey spoke highly of Sean’s image which portrayed difficult rural living conditions in Ireland.
All panels will be displayed at the next club meeting on 28 April 2008.
