International Photographic Portfolio Reviews

at the Sirius Arts Centre
5 and 6 February 2011
Sirius Arts Centre announces a weekend portfolio review session taking place in Cobh, Ireland on 5 &6 February 2011.  The purpose of this review is to provide both photographers and artists working with photography the opportunity to meet one-on-one with professionals from Europe and Ireland. Reviewers include international and Irish Photographic Curators, Festival Directors and other Arts Professionals.  Through these reviews participants can expect to gain vital feedback on their artistic development, expand their professional networks and exchange ideas.

The invited reviewers are looking for new, emerging talent and works by established artists utilizing photography. Whilst the purpose of the review is not guaranteed to deliver exhibitions, publications, or representation, these are the potential outcomes.

Reviews will take place in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland.

DUE TO LIMITED SPACE, A PORTFOLIO MUST BE SUBMITTED FOR CONSIDERATION TO BE CHOSEN FOR AVAILABLE REVIEW SLOTS.

Potential participants should have a well-developed body of work, or project in progress. It’s important that participants have a clear idea of what they want to gain from their review sessions (i.e. feedback, development of work, editing suggestions, etc.).

Due to space and time limitations, submitted portfolios will initially be reviewed by a curatorial panel whose aim it is to match participants with attending reviewer’s interests and it is expected that not all submitted work will be accepted for review appointments. Neither Sirius Arts Centre, nor the curatorial panel will comment on work not given a review slot.

Schedule of Review sessions:

Saturday 5^th February:    11:00am – 1:00pm & 2:00 – 3:30pm

Sunday 6^th February:      11:00am – 1:00pm & 2:00pm – 4:00pm

Each meeting will last 25 minutes and will be timed.

• Completed applications must be received by Sirius Arts Centre no later than Friday 10 December 2010 with a non-refundable submission fee of €10.

All portfolios (not exceeding 20 Images) must be submitted on a CD with other requested information (please see application for list). Application materials will not be returned. If selected for a review slot it is strongly suggested to bring actual photographs – see note on the last page regarding this*

Please note that the Sirius Arts Centre is not able to comment work that does not receive a space in the portfolio review.

Submission conditions:

1)      Each applicant’s submitted portfolio must include a €10 processing fee. Cheques or international money orders should be made payable to Sirius Arts Centre, Ltd. Fees are not refundable, regardless if the work is accepted or not.

If the application is successful, accepted participants will be given a list of appointments with times and dates of the meetings. It’s the responsibility of each participant to be available for the dates and times they are given. Selected applicants MUST be available on February 5^th and 6^th.

MEETING TIMES CANNOT BE CHANGED ONCE ASSIGNED.

2)      Participants MAY NOT transfer meeting times or dates to another applicant.

3)      Any travel and accommodation arrangements participants require to attend the portfolio review at Sirius Arts Centre are the sole responsibility of the participant. Sirius is not in a position to facilitate, or fund travel arrangements.

4)      Participants will receive a list of appointments (dates, times and reviewers) after notification of acceptance. Sirius Arts Centre reserves the right to offer a replacement meeting with a different reviewer if the first reviewer assigned is not available. In this case, notification of any changes will be made to the participant as soon as possible.

5)      Please note: Sirius Arts Centre will not sell, trade or rent the personal information submitted in any application to others. If the applicant does not wish to be notified of future photographic events, check the appropriate line on the application form.

6)      TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A PLACE IN THE REVIEWS, PORTFOLIOS MUST ARRIVE NO LATER THAN 4PM FRIDAY 10 DECEMBER 2010 TO: SIRIUS ARTS CENTRE, THE OLD YACHT CLUB, COBH COUNTY CORK, IRELAND.

The International Photographic Portfolio Review is being made possible with the support of Culture Ireland.  We also thank the Irish Arts Council and Cork County Council for their ongoing support.

The Society has been actively promoting photography since it’s foundation in November 1985 and this latest exhibition is part of that ongoing objective.

Running from November 1st to November 12th, the exhibition features over 95 photographs from current members, at four venues throughout Carrigaline as follows; Ulster Bank, AIB, Bank of Ireland and the library.

Three very highly respected Photographers,and also three gentlemen.

This year the competition was judged by three members from Cork Camera Group. The competition was open to three different forms of media, Colour Print, Mono Print, & Digital  Projection.  Awards were for Overall Photographer of the year, Novice Photographer of the Year & Mono Photographer of the year. And the highest scoring image from a non distinction    holder. Members were allowed to enter up to 15 images of any media but only their five highest scoring images were counted for the final tally for the overall  photographer of the year. The mono photographer of the year was based on the three highest scoring black and white prints.

The night proved to be very entertaining for all as the interval counts during the competition were indicating a very tight contest. After the colour print and mono print sections were counted it was indicating that it was a three way tie for first place, Brid Coakley, John Hooton & Morgan O Neil.  It Wasn’t until the digital section was counted that  Morgan O’Neil was the eventual winner. This capped a great season season for Morgan who had numerous prizes and accreditation’s through out  the year. A very modest Morgan received great applause from all members, he thanked all for there support. Brid Coakley finished in second place and john Hooton in third.

The novice photographer of the year proved to be an even closer competition with. There was great applause when  new member  Mary Magner was announced the winner. The novice photographer of the year is only open to  members who have not received a gold medal  in a regional/national competition and to an individual who has not received a distinction.  The standard of the novice photographer is of a very high standard.

The mono section was won on a  very tight margin by John Hooton.  John who is one of the most successful club photographers in Ireland won the competition by a a tight margin over Brid Coakley. John said he was delighted with the competition and his success on retaining the trophy.

The new Trophy for highest scoring image from a non distinction holder went to Barry Linehane , Barry who is the club secretary was delighted with the win.

Club Chairman Pat Sheehan, thanked the judges and complimented them on their consistent scoring throughout the night. Sean Murphy, Competition Secretary thanked all for their help in organising the event.

The club is now in recess until September.

The Camera Club is to be part of an exhibition in Mallow library in the next week or two. If you would like any of your shots to be included in this exhibition please bring them with you next Monday the 8th for consideration.

Joe’s only talk in the SACC region will be in Mallow Camera Club, on THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER 2009. Mallow Camera Club are delighted to be hosting this event.

The cost of the lecture will be €20 per person which must be booked in advance.  We anticipate a big demand for this lecture and places will be limited.  Therefore, all those interested need to book their place as soon as possible.
